Second-grade students will master standards-based language and vocabulary skills through engaging hands-on center activities. Each of the 12 centers focuses on one skill aligned to grade 2 Common Core language standards in a format that is accessible and motivating for all types of learners. These portable language centers help teachers to: support kinesthetic and visual learners, provide differentiated, practice of language and vocabulary skills, offer a quality center activity, review or reinforce skills, and informally assess a student's understanding of concepts. The 12 centers cover the following Conventions of Standard English and Vocabulary Acquisition and Use skills: matching sentences with collective nouns to pictures and writing sentences using collective nouns, using irregular plural nouns to complete sentences, using reflexive pronouns in sentences, completing sentences using irregular verbs in the past tense, and writing sentences using irregular verbs in the past tense, using adjectives and adverbs to complete sentences, producing, expanding, and rearranging simple and compound sentences, identifying correct capitalization of holidays, product names, and geographic names in sentences, using apostrophes in contractions and possessives, using sentence context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase, matching words with prefixes to definitions, making compound words and matching to pictures to show word meaning, and sorting and writing sentences to identify real-life connections between words and their use. Each easy-to-assemble center provides a hands-on activity with a written practice activity, as well as: correlations and targeted skills, full-color center mats and task cards, an overview with lesson objectives, a student direction page that explains the center activity, a center checklist to record each student's progress.
